LOS ANGELES, CA
The Culver
MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL

About
How do you give an identity to a building that has all the sleepy hallmarks of the early aughts Nueva Spanish Los Angeles condo boom, but your client wants to attract a modern, millennial crowd?.
The owners were new to real estate but had a vision of creating apartment communities that felt more like work/life resort living. Tapping into the energy of millennials, they asked us to provide this drab building with amenities that cater to working-from-homebodies and providing community spaces that mimic the collaborative ease of co-working spaces. Fresh lobbies, an open-air BBQ sky garden area, renovated gym, with new indoor/outdoor business center and new branding and signage package were on the menu.
“…the perfect blend of modern architectural design.”

Inspiration
Canfield becomes the Culver
We drew inspiration from the surrounding thriving Culver City arts scene and married it with a study in materials and finishes that hearken back to the height of Culver City’s cinema epoch. We used the iconic Derby Hat as our inspiration.

Spotlight on Signage
Derby Haberdashery
We used the iconic Derby Hat as our inspiration the logo, to create everything from floor mats to branded frosting for the sliding glass doors we installed to separate the gym from the business center. We created laser-cut back-lit metal building signage, a billboard-sized hand painted building sign, visible from 3 stories up, and individual copper glazed unit signage using dibold, Sydney Harbor paints and vinyl cut logos and brass lettering to ground the building in a handcrafted, tactile environment.

The building’s wayfinding and egress signage incorporated a decidedly craftsman color scheme of olive and maroon, touching back on the architectural details the building had started with.

An outdoor peekaboo LED sign with the coordinates of the building set into a wall of artificial greenery dressing a previously blank wall opposite the main lobby windows.

Attitude Adjustment

Each lobby got its own story and color scheme. We used wonderfully flexible FLOR carpet tiles to highlight each lobby’s identity and worked with amazing craftsmen to carve out shapes and patterns to suit. The sky deck floor lobby walls got a coating of liquid tin, another Sydney Harbor finish. The second floor enjoyed a hanging rattan chair and a jaunty play on a cowhide rug. The first floor featured our iconic derby hat in a light fixture and candy-striped floor. The main lobby was dressed in luxe Venetian plaster and copper accents with a new herringbone wood look porcelain floor and a custom POST sign.

Details Decided
The frontage of the building, while mostly untouched, did enjoy custom stained and stamped concrete ceilings on the front balconies, highlighting the textured craftsman feel of the exterior. Bold signage and colored lighting brings the building dramatically to life at night.
